UFC 139 results: Danny Castillo stops Shamar Bailey via ground and pound

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A relentless Danny Castillo scored frequent takedowns and then unloaded a late-round barrage of punches to force a TKO victory over Shamar Bailey.

Then, immediately after the first-round victory, Castillo admonished his opponent for missing weight for their lightweight fight.

The preliminary-card bout kicked off Saturday's UFC 139 event and streamed live on Facebook prior to the night's Spike TV and pay-per-view portions of the event.

Castillo slipped on an early body kick, and Bailey immediately rushed into capitalize. However, Castillo quickly slammed him to the mat. Bailey got up a few times, but Castillo simply wrapped his hips and slammed him back to the canvas.

Castillo appeared on his way to winning the first round on points as he worked from half guard and Bailey avoided any substantial blows. But late in the round, he postured up to his knees and rained down heavy punches and hammerfists. As the blows got through with more frequency, the ref was forced to warn Bailey to fight back. After a few more punches, though, Bailey showed little, and the ref halted the bout at the 4:52 mark of the opening round.

MMA: Team Alpha Male stands out by not backing down

With the recent string of fighters pulling out of events due to injuries, there is one fight team that has stayed true to themselves and continued to fight. Team Alpha Male has become notorious for their training regimen and never backing down from a fight. Many would say that mixed martial arts is not a team sport, but when you train together and cheer each other on there is a bond that grows. I'm contradicting myself, because MMA "teams" are more like big families. This team, out of Northern California, is led by "The California Kid" Urijah Faber but is full of other fighters on the cusp of stardom. Faber, whose recent match was a loss to Dominick Cruz, is already preparing for his next fight when it shall come. Other fighters are relishing recent victories with the support of teammates.
