Lightweights Danny Castillo vs. Jacob Volkmann set for UFC on Versus 5

A lightweight bout between Danny Castillo (11-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Jacob Volkmann (12-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) is set for UFC on Versus 5.

UFC officials today announced the bout.

UFC on Versus 5 takes place Aug. 14, and the event now is set for the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The night's main card airs live on Versus, though Catillo vs. Volkmann likely will be part of the untelevised preliminary card.

Castillo joined the UFC earlier this year after a long stint in the WEC, where he went 5-3 and finished the run with back-to-back wins over Dustin Poirier and Will Kerr. Then, after the UFC-WEC merger, Castillo made his octagon debut and pushed his win streak to three with a unanimous-decision victory over former UFC title challenger Joe Stevenson.

Danny "Last Call" Castillo is #18 biggest surprise in UFC this year

After suffering a decision loss to fast-rising George Sotiropoulos and getting hit with a hard punch from Mac Danzig, it appeared that the UFC was giving Joe Stevenson an extremely winnable fight against Danny Castillo.

However, Stevenson ended up suffering a third consecutive loss in a unanimous decision, which forced the former lightweight contender to make some changes to get his career back on track.

Stevenson made the move to featherweight, where he recently lost to Javier Vazquez. No official announcement has been made, but it would appear that this fourth straight loss could be the end of Stevenson's run with the UFC.

Why the Zuffa Purchase of Strikeforce is Great for the Sport

Jonathan Snowden once wrote that the WEC's lightweight division was not elite and considering any fighters from the division "UFC caliber" is a mistake. The merge has proven that the division held some very nice prospects that are competing with some of the best in the UFC. And isn't that what we've all wanted? The best fighting the best? If I told you that Danny Castillo would absolutely destroy Joe Stevenson a year ago, I'd be escorted out with a box of my stuff. Yet here we are, Danny Castillo defeated a top 25 fighter in a fight that wasn't even close. Sure, there will be casualties, just like any purchase in the world, but the fact is that the cream will rise to the top and the best fighters will be fighting inside the UFC octagon.
